Thomas Vagts

Manager, Corporate Accounts
MTU Onsite Energy

Thomas Vagts earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.  He later received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas.   He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Minnesota with more than 18 years of experience in the power generation industry.

Vagts started his career at a utility company installing generator sets for their customers.  As a project manager, he designed generator projects, purchased equipment, hired contractors and verified proper installation through extensive testing.  Almost every project involved paralleling between generators and/or the utility.  He gained his greatest experience by being in the field with the contractors and service technicians when problems arose and equipment failed.  He learned more through those troubleshooting and problem solving experiences than ever could have been taught in a classroom.

Most recently he served as president at a generator set dealership.  As president, Tom was responsible for all aspects of the business, including finance, sales and service.  He was involved daily in cash flow management, accounts receivable and payables.  He worked closely with the sales representatives to develop contractor relationships and acceptance from engineering firms.  Tom was also a resource to the service department, helping resolve difficult trouble shooting calls in the field.  During his employment at the dealership, the service business tripled in size and added customer locations across the US.

Vagts is currently a project manager for the Corporate Accounts division at MTU Onsite Energy, a Rolls-Royce Power Systems company. He brings a wealth of knowledge to this multi-faceted team which works closely with large companies to provide global power generation solutions straight from the United States production location in Mankato, Minnesota.

In his spare time, Vagts is working on an extensive renovation of the 100-year-old house he recently purchased in North Mankato, Minnesota. He is an avid hunter and fisherman and is a father to two beautiful daughters.
