Data center requirements for power depend on the application and implementation of the data center itself. This presentation will look at how and why reliability requirements vary, and how power solutions can best fit the needs of the particular application. Several AC UPS architectures will be discussed, examining some of the pros and cons of each to determine best fits to particular applications. In addition to the UPS architecture, distribution of power to the data center's servers can dramatically affect the operation of both the UPS and the IT load. Power distribution incurs power losses, so optimization of the distribution architecture can dramatically affect the overall efficiency and operating expenses (OpEx) of the facility. The effect of phase balance on large 3 phase UPS's is also examined with a view to maximizing UPS utilization, and minimizing capital expense (CapEx) and OpEx.
